Not the Way It Used to Be

A loving legacy must be transferred, not just given. It must be embraced and appropriated into the core of our children's hearts. We can't be satisfied with modeling (as important as that is). We must develop lessons for our children that compel them to wrestle (and therefore remember) critical truths.

The new look for the family makes this goal more difficult to attain. Age of Information families are too hurried, too over-scheduled, and too indulged. Such families lack the built-in responsibilities that once made the teaching of character a daily part of childhood. Professional lawn services, prepared microwave dinners, maid services, and mechanized car washes take away some of the natural opportunities to learn responsibility. Our crowded schedules prompt many modern families to use paid outsiders to do what once were strictly family functions.

We don't even camp the way we used to. We've replaced tents, bedrolls, open fires, and hikes in the woods with Winnebagos equipped with kitchens, queen-size beds, VCRs, and dirt bikes.

I'm not against modern conveniences. When I live in the woods for a few days, I like to sit down to a tablecloth and Tom Brokaw, too. But the amenities often circumvent opportunities that build character.
